How do I get my 12month old off the pacifier?

My daughter is now 12 months old and she cant sleep without her pacifier! One night I lost it and she cried forever, I had to go to the store and buy a new just so she could go to sleep and stop screaming. And she has to be rocked to sleep also. What should I do just let her cry or just let her have it. And how do I get her to sleep on her own. I really dont want her to be 4 yrs old with this dang thing and will need braces, like my sister!!!
