For example, say: At sundown, we would walk to the mountain. That needs the preterit, it gives a certain time. Now, say: We walked to the mountain. That needs the imperfect, because we know it happened but we don't know exactly when. Believe me, it's not the easiest thing in the world to figure out, but practice makes perfect, just use your judgement.
